“People Said Last Year’s Cocktail Hour Felt Boring”

I had a fascinating conversation with a new client last week.

They said it straight out:  “People said last year’s cocktail hour felt boring.”

When we talked it out, the reason was simple.

Nothing happened.

So the phones came out, and the energy stayed flat.

Drink, eat, leave.

And when the guests describe the event later, they said it was “boring.”

It's bad to have your guests describing your event as "boring," but this is worse - they don't talk about that experience at all.

I see this across all event types - internal meetings, customer events, trade show booths, trade show hospitality, VIP client events like The Masters, and even golf tournaments and private events.

People are expected to create their own fun on their own - and that just doesn't happen.

“Boredom” happens when nothing engages people directly and nothing feels meaningful or relevant.

A lot of common entertainment ideas are designed to stay in the background. They are pleasant and unobtrusive. “Our people like a laid back event…” they say.

That sounds “safe,” but when the goal is engagement and connection, "background" becomes “invisible.”

Events that work create at least one clear activating moment — something that interrupts guests’ usual pattern and gives them a reason to engage each other.

It makes them say "something impossible just happened, and I was part of it.’"

You can hear the laughs, cheers, and applause from a big surprise or shock. People saying things like "Did you see that?" and "How did you do that?" in the moment and then comparing their experiences later "I was only thinking of that card!" and "Were you in on it?”

Now that you've got the energy and conversations going, you can leverage that response to accomplish your business objectives. When an event is producing almost no residual value, adding one genuine activating moment tends to create a much larger impact than most people expect.

Nobody will call that "another boring cocktail hour."

If you’re finalizing a budget or planning your own holiday party or hospitality events, have you designed an activating moment into your event?

Need one?  Give me a call (561) 596 3877. I don't know that we're a fit for your event, but I'd be happy to explain what other people have done to create full engagement at events like yours.
